where to start with event strategy
Per Mintel's 2024 Global Consumer Trends, 60% of U.S. Consumers believe that companies are "pretending to be sustainable."
"When it comes to climate action, consumers are turning their attention to how brands hold themselves accountable to their sustainability goals. Waiting for regulatory pushes and industry accreditations will not be enough to satisfy consumer expectation."
What we see in the events industry is that we are in a state of #reactivity to #sustainableevents vs. #proactively aligning business models and operations to support sustainable futures. Event profs are waiting for their clients to ask for sustainable solutions rather than getting in front of them. Yet - many clients don't know where to begin or what to ask for.
Consumers are increasingly concerned - and their expectations that events, suppliers and manufacturers take responsibility for sustainability within their operations are steadily increasing, as well.
How can you do this, within your organization?
First, #scalesustainability understanding and action across your event organization, showcasing conscious leadership internally as well as to clients & event attendees. PURPOSE Sustainability Strategy exists for this #purpose. Pun intended.
Next, here's a snapshot of the actions we teach event teams to mitigate impacts all the major aspects of #eventemissions:
1. TRAVEL: measure it & offset it via PURPOSE Net Zero (and host virtual, wherever it makes sense)
2. ENERGY: calculate use & buy renewable energy certificates (RECs) & push your venues & hotels shift to #greenenergy
3. SOURCING: source local, support diverse suppliers, use circular design thinking and avoid #lineartolandfill material usage
4. FOOD: choices - choose veg over meat, sourcing - work with local, regenerative farmers, donation: give surplus food to local community in need
5. WASTE: divert food scraps from landfill, compost, recycle!
Finally, #communication is also key to behavior change via #procurement practices and attendee comms to bring everyone along for the ride.
AND, #CSR activities are also key to positive impacts in the local community.
We seek the proactive #leaders ready to champion #sustainability in the #eventsindustry, is that you?
